1. What's Belfast Girls about?
English Theatre Düsseldorf (ETD) brings professional english-language plays to international audiences.
We worked together on a series of videos to promote their production of the powerful and thought-provoking play Belfast Girls by Jaki McCarrick.
I shot this segment with the play's director, the wonderful Ilya Parenteau, in which she summarises the story: five young women sail from Belfast to Sydney in 1850, seeking to escape the devastation of the Great Famine for a better future.
ETD used this video extensively for social media promotion of the play and as part of their portfolio when pitching for funding for future projects.
This video is an example of a simple sit-down interview, common in documentary shooting. A pre-prepared list of simple questions helped to elicit interesting answers. We had to plan carefully for the limited time we could grab with the cast and crew during their busy rehearsal schedule. We went with a minimalist two-camera, two-point lighting setup, which still achieved a flattering look, and a handheld microphone to enable very fast turnaround.
ETD is a long-term client with various projects in the pipeline.
